Bath law firm Mogers will convert to a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) format as from 4th January 2010. Having represented the legal needs of the City for over 155 years, this change marks the start of a new era for the firm.
Mogers have been providing an expert legal service in Bath for over 155 years. On 1st January 2010 a new era will unfold when Mogers changes from a Partnership to a Limited Liability Partnership. (LLP).
This means that the firm will be structured more like a Limited Company, with the accompanying responsibilities for transparent reporting and recording of activity. It allows a more flexible structure for growth and allows for the appointment of non-legal members.
A move to LLP status focuses on planning for the future and promoting a culture of operational efficiencies, innovation and growth.
Managing Partner, Derwent Campbell says, "We have always taken a practical, commercial approach to advising clients. It is important to us to run the firm in a way that reflects this. Over the years, flexibility has been key to our success and the way we work. We have decided to take this step now because we feel it is right both for the firm and for our clients".

About LLP status
An LLP is a hybrid between a partnership (with unlimited liability) and a company (limited liability). The Partners will have lower liabilities for debts, which may arise from running the business but can still lose the capital they have invested in it.
There are more administrative duties involved compared to a Partnership business structure and it is more similar to operating a Limited Company as it has a continuing legal existence independent of its Members.
In relation to tax, however, a LLP is similar to a partnership: it is tax transparent, that is to say, it pays no tax but its Members do in relation to the income or gains they receive through the LLP.
This format was introduced to law firms in the UK in 2001.
